On sunday, went to Glamourous Restaurant in Manchester for dimsums with my mum, me treating her & my sis a Happy Mid-autumn day! We don't normally come here, so we all agreed that we eat the dimsums we don't normally have.
And when the sweet snack trolley came... mum ordered a plate of brown sugar pudding (boot jai go). She put it aside for later, kinda saving the sweet for later and enjoy the savouries first. Anyway, after one hour of munching, mum decide she save the puddings for her afternoon snack and put it in the takeaway box.
She also said to me & sis... ' daughter... remember this is my favourite snack, this remind me of HK'.
So she have inspired me or motivated me to try out this recipe and she can have as many as she want!
Anyway, this morning, put some red beans in a bowl and put some hot water from the kettle to soak all day. So tonight got home after work, and in between cooking my dinner, i also make these puddings.
First gather the ingredients....
Then the red beans i soaked all day, i put it in a saucepan and let it boil.... i think i boiled it for 20mins in full heat and then drain water and put it in a bowl and set aside for later use.
Then mix flour & water, dis-solve sugar and then more mixing to get it into a liquid mixture.....
Then brushed the my chinese tea cups/bowls with a little oil, before filling it with the sugar/flour mixture to 80% full, then a teaspoon of red bean. Put it in the steamer for 25mins.
Eventually, i got impatient... thinking '4 at a time... will take me ages'... then like flicker of a switch.... i remember the new silicone moulds i got from TJHughes at the weekend. So heart-shape boot jai go it is.
First batches of my home-made boot jai go...... ta da!
Then more steaming with teacups and heart-shape... but at the end i opened my chocolate silicone-moulds too, and once steamed..... made some shaped at Ken's request for his photography.
I am very happy with the result, and had some fun playing with Ken's camera.
Took the brown sugar puddings to my mum.... and at the same time dad & uncle tony walked in. All tasted it and first thing they said was .....' the red beans are too hard.'
Mum tell me to steam the red beans next time to make it mushier..
Dad said it was alright... but was munching into another one.
Uncle said the pudding taste good, just right, not too sweet, good texture when biting into it. But next time soak the red beans overnight in hot water then boil it for 30mins but from medium to low heat.
Well, sitting there 2 chefs and all grew up from HK..... must be right.
Here is my up-dated recipe:
